I completed the listening excercise at home on a weekday morning. I was home alone.
INSIDE:
These are the noises I noticed in my kitchen/dining room in the order that I heard them:
- The fridge working, doing its thing, which became almost like a white noise effect through this experience.
- the cars going by outside make ‘swooshing noises’ and sound like far away waves
- I hear a bird squawking (a bit like a seagull)
- a bus screeching to a stop, and followed by a rumbling when it accelerated
- mailbox lid clanks
- complete silence other than the fridge for a really long while
- sporadic car movement noises reappear
- two more buses go by with only one stopping
- something in the kitchen makes a popping sound
- silence again
- a few more cars
- my alarm goes off sounding the end of the exercise
OUTSIDE:
These are the noises I heard in order while sitting on the deck outside my house. There are lots of trees surrounding me and my house is located on a corner of Burnhamthorpe (a bigger street) and a side street.
- the leaves rustle a bit and it seems pretty peaceful and quiet
- a few cars go by
- I hear a drill in the distance of a high pitched nature inturrupded and accompanied by a louder and deeper rumbling drill
- a bus screeches very loudly, this sound is repeated shortly after however softer
- the car activity picks up and a few trucks and buses go by with only one bus stopping
- the noise intensifies with the drilling and traffic noise fluctuating in strength
- suddenly all the noises start disappearing (drilling first than the traffic).
- even the wind doesn’t blow.
- I sneeze
- a few cars go by
- drilling resumes again
- car door opens and closes
- my phone rings
- cars and buses fill the street again with noise and the deep drill rumble is most prominent
- my alarm rings, sounding off the end of the outdoor exercise.
I didn’t hear any new noises that I hadn’t recognized before because I am often alone at home trying to tune those noises out while working.
